Microlearning Programmes on Smart Cities Developed at the 8th ACEploration Event

24.04.2026

On 21–22 April 2026, the 8th academic networking event “ACEploration” of the ACE²-EU European University Alliance took place at Lithuanian College of Engineering in Kaunas, bringing together academic staff from nine partner universities for collaboration, exchange of ideas, and the development of academic initiatives.

The theme of this meeting was “Smart Cities,” inviting participants to explore solutions for creating more sustainable, intelligent, and inclusive urban environments. Alongside micro-course development sessions, working groups also focused on the advancement of the European Degree Label and common degree programmes of partner universities.

Discussions addressed a wide range of topics, including urban development, digital technologies, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and civic engagement. Latvian Academy of Culture was represented by guest lecturer and Head of the Valmiera County Culture Department Liene Jakobsone and ACE²-EU APP Factory coordinator Baiba Freimane.

Reflecting on the experience, Liene Jakobsone stated:
“Participating in ACEploration in Kaunas was a valuable and inspiring experience that allowed us to explore multiple directions of urban development. Over two days, we learned about ideas from academics across Europe on sustainable, smart, and inclusive cities, while engaging in an active co-creation process for developing new microlearning programmes. Discussions covered a broad range of topics—from climate resilience and green infrastructure to smart mobility solutions and social inclusion.”

The course concept “Placemaking for Joy,” developed by the Latvian Academy of Culture, attracted significant interest from partner universities. The course uses the former textile factory in Mazsalaca as a case study and applies play-based methods as a creative tool for activating urban spaces. Like other ACE²-EU microlearning courses, it will be an international, practice-based, challenge-driven learning experience, planned for implementation in spring 2027 in cooperation with alliance partners.

As part of the visit, participants also explored the Bosch Training Centre and the college’s Aviation Centre, gaining insight into modern learning infrastructure, hands-on training opportunities, and strong collaboration with industry partners. This highlighted the importance of cooperation between higher education institutions and industry in creating study environments that meet labor market needs.

The final ACEploration event will take place in early July 2026 at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt in Germany. The theme will be announced soon, and two representatives from the Latvian Academy of Culture will be invited to participate.
