Not only does the Latvian Academy of Culture offer study programmes that contribute to the Latvian system of cultural education, the Academy also improves the quality of cultural life in Latvia by developing cooperation with the Latvian school youth and with the representatives of different cultural centres and organisations. For example, the students and the lecturers of the Academy work purposefully in activating cultural life proceses in Latvia and strengthening national cultural values in the Latvian society.
One of the most notable activities that involves youth from Latvian schools in discussion on Latvian national identity, inheritance of cultural values, and intergroup solidarity is the Cultural Canon – a competition aimed at Form 10 – 12 pupils from comprehensive as well as art, and music schools of Latvia. The competition has begun in 2012 as a competition in the school subject Culturology, however now it has developed into a wide discussion forum on the meaning of the national cultural and artistic values in the life of Latvians, as well as on the inheritance preconditions, and the creative works of the last two decades. The format of the Cultural Canon competition is changed according to the topicalities of the cultural life of Latvia and is currently supported both by the Ministry for Culture, and by the Ministry for Education and Science, as well as by the leading figures of the cultural life of Latvia.
