Fieldwork Completed for the Europe-Wide Quantitative Study “EU Kids Online V”

04.12.2025

As part of the international “EU Kids Online” network, from 1 September to 30 November 2025, the Institute of Arts and Cultural Studies (IACS) of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LAC) conducted the fieldwork for a quantitative study on children’s online experiences - a representative survey of children aged 9 to 16.

The extensive survey included questions about children’s internet usage habits, devices and access, online activities and platforms, digital skills, online risks and harm, exposure to undesirable content or behaviour, safety strategies, support from parents and teachers, as well as children’s attitudes and well-being related to the digital environment. The survey was carried out in general education schools across Latvia, covering students from grades 3 to 10. A total of 1050 respondents were reached.

The research team extends its gratitude to every school that responded to the invitation to participate in the survey and dedicated its time to conducting it on-site!

Special thanks to IACS visiting research assistants - Laura Elīna Šulca, Elizabete Granta, Anete Laursone, Santa Marija Vīnupa, Anitra Berga, Paula Lībeka, and Eva Marhileviča - for their contribution to the fieldwork process.

Context: Since 2025, the Institute of Arts and Cultural Studies (IACS) of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LAC) has become Latvia’s representative in the international research network “EU Kids Online,” which brings together academic partners from more than 30 European countries. The network is led by the University of Oslo (Prof. Elisabeth Staksrud) and aims to deepen the understanding of children’s and adolescents’ (aged 9–16) experiences in the digital environment—both the opportunities it offers and the risks it involves. IACS’s participation in the project is coordinated by Gints Klāsons, Leader of Applied Research Projects, while the fieldwork for the quantitative survey is overseen by IACS research assistant Laura Brutāne.
